Le autorità locali nella città nord-occidentale di Oran, in Algeria, hanno chiuso altre due chiese tra la crescente pressione sui cristiani nel paese del Maghreb.

Le due chiese – L’Oratoire (L’Oratorio) nel centro di Oran e una chiesa del villaggio a Layayda (a circa 40 km da Oran) – sono state sigillate dalla polizia martedì 27 febbraio.

La notifica della polizia affermava che le chiese non avevano l’approvazione statale. La decisione non è la prima del suo genere ad Orano.

Il 9 novembre 2017 è stata chiusa anche un’altra chiesa nella città di Aïn Turk (a 15 km da Oran). Le autorità hanno affermato che la chiesa era stata usata per “stampare illegalmente vangeli e pubblicazioni destinati all’evangelismo”.

Il 21 febbraio due chiese (tra le 25 che hanno ricevuto le notifiche) nella città di Tizi Ouzou, nella provincia orientale di Kabylie, hanno chiesto “di cessare immediatamente tutte le attività religiose”.

I dirigenti dell’EPA hanno definito le chiusure “ingiustificabili”. Hanno notato che tutte le chiese colpite sono affiliate all’EPA, che è stata ufficialmente riconosciuta dal governo dal 1974.

Sabato 24 febbraio l’APE ha chiesto una settimana di preghiera e digiuno per la nazione. Alla luce della crescente pressione, l’Alleanza evangelica mondiale ha anche invitato il governo algerino “a garantire che la libertà religiosa dei cristiani sia salvaguardata in conformità con il diritto internazionale”.

Godfrey Yogarajah, vicesegretario generale della WEA e capo della Commissione per la libertà religiosa, ha aggiunto: “Chiediamo anche al governo, in linea con la costituzione del paese, di prendere tutte le misure necessarie per garantire la libertà di culto per tutti i gruppi religiosi nel paese.”

Crescente pressione

Altre forme di restrizione sono state riportate anche nelle ultime settimane in Algeria.

Il 13 dicembre 2017, un cristiano francese, residente ad Orano per diversi anni, è stato negato il rientro nel paese.

Il pastore Louis Martinez, sulla sessantina, è affiliato alla Chiesa riformata francese. Lui e sua moglie avevano gestito una scuola privata di francese.

Secondo il gruppo di difesa cristiana Middle East Concern, il pastore Martinez è stato fermato all’aeroporto di Oran e ha chiesto di presentare il suo permesso di soggiorno, che era stato rilasciato di recente ed era valido per dieci anni, e poi ha informato che doveva lasciare l’Algeria.

Le autorità non hanno fornito alcun motivo per la sua deportazione, ha detto il MEC. La moglie è stata in seguito in grado di sistemare la famiglia e gli affari in Algeria e recentemente ha lasciato il paese.

Local authorities in Algeria’s north-western city of Oran have closed two more churches amidst growing pressure on Christians in the Maghreb country.

The two churches – L’Oratoire (The Oratory) in Oran’s city centre, and a village church in Layayda (about 40km from Oran) – were sealed off by police on Tuesday, 27 February.

The police notification stated that the churches didn’t have state approval. The decision is not the first of its kind in Oran.

On 9 November 2017, another church in the town of Aïn Turk (15km from Oran) was also closed. The authorities claimed the church had been used to “illegally print Gospels and publications intended for evangelism”.

Since December, 25 out of the 45 churches affiliated to the main Protestant Church body in Algeria – the Protestant Church of Algeria (known as EPA, its French acronym) – have been visited by a committee of officials from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, national gendarmerie, intelligence department and fire brigade.

The churches were informed that the visits were aimed at checking compliance with safety regulations, and they were given three months’ notice.

They were also advised to seek permission from the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

On 21 February two churches (among the 25 which received notifications) in the city of Tizi Ouzou, in the eastern province of Kabylie, were asked “to cease all religious activities immediately”.

EPA leaders called the closures “unjustifiable”. They noted that all the affected churches are affiliated with the EPA, which has been officially recognised by the government since 1974.

On Saturday 24 February the EPA called for a week of prayer and fasting for the nation. In light of the increasing pressure, the World Evangelical Alliance has also called on the Algerian government “to ensure that the religious freedom of Christians is safeguarded in accordance with international law”.

Godfrey Yogarajah, Deputy Secretary-General of the WEA and head of its Religious Liberty Commission, added: “We also call on the government, in keeping with the country’s constitution, to take all steps necessary to guarantee the freedom of worship for all religious groups in the country.”

Growing pressure

Other forms of restriction have been also reported in recent weeks in Algeria.

On 13 December 2017, a French Christian, resident in Oran for several years, was denied re-entry to the country.

Pastor Louis Martinez, in his sixties, is affiliated with the French Reformed Church. He and his wife had been running a private French-language school.

According to Christian advocacy group Middle East Concern, Pastor Martinez was stopped at Oran Airport and asked to submit his residency permit, which had been recently issued and was valid for ten years, and then informed he must leave Algeria.

The authorities gave no reason for his deportation, MEC said. His wife was subsequently able to settle their family and business affairs in Algeria and has recently also left the country.

Malaysian Federal Court refuses four people their right to affirm Christian identity

Malaysia’s highest court dismissed an appeal today (27 February) against four appellants who wanted to be formally recognised as Christians.

The five judges of the Malaysian Federal Court ruled that in matters of conversion away from Islam, it was necessary for them to consult the Islamic Sharia courts.

The president of the court, Tan Sri Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin, said the decision was unanimous.

He added that even though there are no specific provisions in the Sharia ordinance over conversions out of Islam, the religious court still has legal authority on what he termed “apostasy”.

Raucous, unruly scenes and shouts of “Allahu akbar” (“Allah is the greatest”) greeted the decision as a mob surrounded the Catholic Archbishop of Kuching, Simon Peter Poh, outside the court complex. He was jostled while being escorted to his car amid fears that he might be assaulted.

Three of the appellants had previously converted from Christianity to Islam when they married Malay-Muslim spouses, but now want to affirm their Christian identity again. The fourth is a Malay-Muslim who embraced the Christian faith and was baptised in 2009.

The Federal Court, sitting in Kuching, the capital of Sarawak state, yesterday (26 February) heard the joint appeal of the four appellants who want their conversions legally recognised. The judges then adjourned their decision to today.

The lawyer for the appellants, Baru Bian, an opposition politician and a campaigner for the customary rights of indigenous Malaysians, many of whom are Christian, had been optimistic that the judges would base their decision on the substance of the country’s civil law.

He said the argument of the state was that Sarawak Shariah Court Ordinance 2001 “has provisions on conversion into Islam”. Since there is no provision for those who want to leave the faith, he argued that the civil court should have jurisdiction.

Three of the appellants – Mohamed Syafiq Abdullah, who has taken the name Tiong Choo Ting; Jenny Peter, who was formerly Nur Muzdhalifah Abdullah; and Salina Jau Abdullah – converted to Islam in order to marry Muslims. All four were asking the Federal Court to have their names and their faith changed on their national identity cards.

In 2006 Jenny Peter divorced her Muslim husband and re-embraced Christianity. The Muslim husband of Salina Jau divorced her in 1992, and she too returned to Christianity. In the case of Tiong Choo Ting, he began to practise Christianity after his Muslim wife died in 2007.

The fourth appellant, Syarifah Nooraffyza Wan Hosen, is ethnic Malay and was raised as a Muslim. In her declaration she said she no longer practises Islam and was baptised in 2009. She wants her identity card to record her new faith and a new name, Vanessa Elizabeth.

According to local media, all four were required to undergo counselling for renouncing the Muslim faith. But they have remained adamant they want to renounce Islam, and have signed statutory declarations expressing this desire.

All four remain Muslims as far as official documentation is concerned.

I cinque giudici della Corte federale malese hanno stabilito che in materia di conversione dall’islam, era necessario per loro consultare i tribunali della Sharia islamica.

Il presidente della corte, Tan Sri Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin, ha detto che la decisione è stata presa all’unanimità.

Ha aggiunto che anche se non ci sono disposizioni specifiche nell’ordinanza della Sharia sulle conversioni dall’Islam, la corte religiosa ha ancora autorità legale su ciò che ha definito “apostasia”.

Some social-media users said they felt disappointed by the Federal Court’s decision. Some even nicknamed the case the Sharia Court’s “Hotel California” clause, recalling the 1970s song by The Eagles about a hotel you could check into but never leave.

Islam is considered intrinsic to the identity of Malaysia’s majority Malay people, and under Sharia (Islamic law), renouncing Islam is viewed as apostasy, a crime, although liberal Muslim theologians argue that conversion is a matter for the individual. Many of the country’s sizeable Buddhist, Christian and Hindu populations are of non-Malay heritage.

In recent decades Islamists have become increasingly vocal in their demands that Malaysia be governed as a Muslim state, and analysts say the spread of a more conservative interpretation of Islam lies behind the rise in attacks on churches and church leaders.

At the same time, civil courts have handed jurisdiction over Islamic religious matters to the Sharia court system and at times taken a policy of non-interference between the two courts. This has left people wishing to leave Islam in legal limbo.

According to Malaysia’s constitution, the country is a secular state with Islam as its main religion. However, Islamists refute this, saying that the colonial-era charter of rights is no longer valid, and they demand the precedence of religious law.

A suspect in a blasphemy case in Lahore, Pakistan, claims he was tortured by police and jumped from a fourth floor window to avoid being forced by officers to perform oral sex on his cousin, who is also under investigation.

Sajid Masih, 24, suffered multiple fractures after jumping on Friday, 23 February, from the building where he was being investigated. He claims he had been beaten, kicked and hit with an electrical cable, then was forced to remove his cousin’s trousers and ordered to perform a sex act on his cousin, 20-year-old Patras Masih.

However local police and the Pakistani cybercrime investigation agency both offered different explanations for his action and injuries. Small protests were organised by civil society organisations today (26 February) to condemn his alleged mistreatment. Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal has ordered an official inquiry.

Last week World Watch Monitor reported that 800 families were on the run after Patras Masih was accused of using his phone to post a blasphemous picture in a Facebook group. He surrendered to the police on 19 February in his Christian neighbourhood in a northern suburb of Lahore, and was handed by the court to the cybercrime wing of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

Four days later, on 23 February, his cousin Sajid, a janitor in a local college in Lahore, was summoned by the FIA office in Lahore. “They had called me to come and get [Patras’] cell phone checked. I went myself to the office where Patras was also present,” Sajid told World Watch Monitor after regaining consciousness the next day, Saturday 24 February. He was interviewed on video in the presence of two local church leaders, Emmanuel Khokhar and Niamat Bhatti.

“They beat me with fists and kicks and then with a computer electrical cable,” Sajid continued. “I asked them why they were beating me. They said my fault was that I was Patras’ cousin. Then they told me to call myself and Patras ‘accursed’, which I did. Then they ordered me to take Patras’ [trousers] off and [perform oral sex on] him, but I refused, saying that he was my [cousin] and I couldn’t. Then they started yelling at him, at which I ran to the window.

“Finding no other way, I jumped from the window – and then did not know anything,” he added.

Sajid was placed on a stretcher and taken to hospital, but was moved to another hospital later that evening. The FIA Inspector investigating the case, Khalid Saeed, lodged a criminal case against Sajid the following day for attempting to commit suicide, a crime punishable with one year’s imprisonment and a fine.

According to the criminal report lodged against him in the Civil Lines Police Station, “During the investigation, Sajid was questioned in the presence of Patras Masih regarding the blasphemous pictures of Prophet Muhammad’s (Peace Be Upon Him) grave. The forensic expert took his cell phone and asked for Facebook ID and its password. On this, Sajid became terrified and apologised, saying he had deleted the controversial page and the blasphemous pictures. Fearful of recovery of the pictures, Sajid jumped off the window and fell on a car [bonnet].”

“We are outraged, shocked and horrified by the alleged behaviour of the FIA Cybercrime Wing officials. We demand that this incident be investigated at the earliest, and firm action be taken against the officials involved.”

The FIA Deputy Director Khawaja Hamad told BBC Urdu that Patras Masih was beaten up on the court premises by complainants when he was presented there on 23 February. He told the BBC that a request had been sent to Facebook to provide information about the group in which the blasphemous picture was posted.

“During [the] investigation, Patras mentioned about Sajid, after which he was asked to join [the] investigation. Patras was being interrogated; he first threw his cell phone from the window and then hung outside the window to threaten us. Then his hand slipped and he fell,” Hamad said.

Human rights lawyer Asad Jamal told World Watch Monitor that the information recorded in the criminal report and the statement by FIA Deputy Director did not corroborate. “It would remain difficult for the agency to explain there was no torture involved in this instance,” Jamal said.

Such treatment is clearly in violation of the United Nations’ Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, he added.

“He is seriously injured and the manner in which he has sustained injuries could have led to his immediate death; further, if his physical condition doesn’t improve for some reason he may still be at the risk of losing life,” he said.

Michelle Chaudhry, president of the Cecil & Iris Chaudhry Foundation, which advocates for Pakistani minorities, said in a statement: “We are outraged, shocked and horrified by the alleged behaviour of the FIA Cybercrime Wing officials. We demand that this incident be investigated at the earliest, and firm action be taken against the officials involved.”

She continued: “A fair trial is every citizen’s right regardless of faith, caste or gender … We demand that the Government look into this on priority and fulfil its responsibility to protect the life and dignity of every single Pakistani.”

Human rights activist Khalid Shahzad, who lives in the same area as Sajid, the Dhair neighbourhood in Shahdara, told World Watch Monitor that such investigating agencies sometimes used harsh techniques to blackmail suspects regardless of their religion.

Shahzad added that the social-media group to which Patras and Sajid belonged “had 16 members but only Christians of the group are being interrogated”.

The situation in Dhair remains tense, although most of the 800 families who fled last week for fear of violence have returned. Safaniya Masih, who runs the nearby Brethren’s Church, told World Watch Monitor that their two congregations were able to meet yesterday [Sunday] for services.

Irfan Mufti, Deputy Director of a civil society movement named South Asia Partnership, told World Watch Monitor: “It is very important that the government intervene and ensure the safety and security of Sajid, because most of the time we are unaware how the investigation is being done with suspects in such sensitive cases. Sajid’s case can prove helpful in improving our legal and justice system.”

Some say the underlying reason for this entire communal strife might be land, as has been the case elsewhere. In Lahore’s Joseph Colony, where more than 100 houses were burned in March 2013, Pakistan’s Supreme Court noted that the land on which the colony was set up could be the prime reason it was targeted. The land belonged to the government and is surrounded by huge factory complexes.

Safaniya Masih said the areas of the Dhair neighbourhood where trouble persists are those where Christians have not transferred the land into their names. Initially the landlord told them to build houses and pay the land price in instalments, he said, adding: “When they had done this, they refused to legally transfer the land and several houses have filed legal cases in this regard.”

His brother, Bishop Emmanuel Masih, had erected a cross in the neighbourhood, about five feet tall. When most Christians had fled, some of the local Muslims wanted to break the cross down.

“We were not here but those who were left resisted and did not allow it to be brought down,” Safaniya Masih said. “A few girls were coming back when some boys shouted that sooner or later the houses of Christians would be set on fire. But we are hopeful that God will be with us and keep us safe in this troubled time.”

*The name ‘Masih’, which derives from ‘Messiah’, has been used for whole Christian communities for many years in Pakistan. Bibi, meanwhile, is a respectful term for a married or older woman in Pakistan and other parts of South Asia – the most famous Christian example being Asia Bibi, who has been on death row for blasphemy since 2010.

UPDATE (27 February): This morning Punjab parliamentarian Shunila Ruth raised the question of the security of Pakistani Christians in the Punjab Assembly. She said that Christians would stand for justice and if anyone violated the law then he or she should be brought to justice. Talking to World Watch Monitor, Ruth said that she had demanded an independent inquiry. “It shouldn’t be that FIA investigate their personnel who tortured and used these inhumane investigation techniques,” she said. She also raised an objection that despite the passing of four days, Sajid’s multiple injuries hadn’t been treated with an operation.

Death and destruction as Boko Haram launches fresh attacks in Cameroon

Boko Haram insurgents continue to carry out attacks outside the borders of Nigeria, where the group began.

The Islamists recently attacked two villages in northern Cameroon, close to the north-eastern border with Nigeria, leaving one person dead and many homes destroyed by fire.

The 23 February attack on Virkaza and nearby Tchebechebe was the fourth time Boko Haram has raided villages in Cameroon this year.

During the latest attack, militias set fire to more than 100 huts, a Catholic church and school. The fires claimed the life of one person, who has not yet been named.

A survivor of the attack told World Watch Monitor what happened.

“They attacked Virkaza and Tchebechebe at about 8pm. We started hearing gunshots way before, but it seems that is when they started their attack. We saw the flames at about 8.30pm,” said the survivor, who did not want to be named.

A church leader in Tourou said he could see the fire 25km away.

According to the survivor, Boko Haram militants arrived in the villages “and simply did as they pleased. The army fired shots from afar and the attackers stopped their carnage for a while, but, when they couldn’t hear shots anymore, the attackers simply started burning again, attacking the two villages at the same time”.

There was no resistance from security forces because the area is “very difficult to access”, they said, and the insurgents left the area at around 2am “when they disappeared back across the Nigerian border”.

This latest attack is not the first time that Boko Haram has ventured beyond its borders.

In 2017 there were 32 attacks in Cameroon, two in Chad, and seven in Niger, according to the BBC. There were fewer cross-border attacks last year (41) than in 2016 (47), but the incursions were into the same three countries, all of which border north-eastern Nigeria – the group’s stronghold. There were 80 Boko Haram attacks in Nigeria in 2016, and 109 in 2017. Figures show a growing emphasis on the use of suicide attacks in both Nigeria and Cameroon.

Other attacks in northern Cameroon

Earlier in February, a Boko Haram attack in Gitawa left six dead, including a pregnant woman. Five of the victims were Christian.

The group claimed responsibility for the 15 January attack on Roum, which left four dead after the militants stormed the village and set fire to homes and two churches. On 17 January Boko Haram militants set fire to four houses in Dafidalo.

A church leader in the region told World Watch Monitor the attackers’ aim is to “push us out to occupy these zones”, and that they are seeking revenge for counter-attacks by government forces.

Another church leader, from Mozogo, said: “It is very difficult for the people here. They don’t have anything left for themselves. [Boko Haram] leave no house standing… They took away the money of the church, which was kept in safes… In the night, we just call on God to help us to see the day.”

Before this year’s cross-border attacks on Cameroon, the region had enjoyed a period of relative calm. The last attack was in August 2017 when Boko Haram kidnapped six siblings from Moskota, after killing their father. All the children, aged between three and 15, later managed to escape when their guard fell asleep. They were found by vigilantes and handed over to the Cameroon military.

Police reported that at least 13 people had been killed in clashes that broke out on Monday (26 February) between Christian and Muslim youths in Kaduna state. Police commissioner Austin Iwar said: “We don’t want to jump to conclusions as to what led to the mayhem. The speculation was that some Christian boys were not happy that their girls are befriending Muslim boys.”

This has been marked by a growing number of attacks on Christian farmers by mainly Muslim Hausa-Fulani herdsmen. Last year researchers said that in 2016 violence in the Middle Belt had accounted for more deaths than those caused by Boko Haram.

110 schoolgirls still missing

Meanwhile, an attack on The Government Girls Science and Technical College in Dapche, part of northern Nigeria’s Borno state, has led to fears of “another Chibok”.

Most of the 926 students escaped, were rescued or later returned to the school, but an estimated 110 girls are unaccounted for. According to Reuters, two girls were killed.

It took the Nigerian government a week to confirm that 110 girls had been kidnapped, reported AP, and only on Tuesday (27 February) were their names released.

Leah Sherubu is the only Christian student among the list of missing girls, in what is a Muslim-dominated area.

President Muhammadu Buhari said the kidnapping was a “national disaster” and apologised to the girls’ families.

The military said it withdrew from Dapchi weeks before the attack because the town was “relatively calm” and its troops were needed elsewhere.

There was hope among Iranian Christians that the mass protests earlier this year could effect change for them, but they continue to be harassed and imprisoned on spurious charges.

An Iranian convert to Christianity, Naser Navard Gol-Tapeh, who recently lost his appeal against a 10-year sentence for “missionary activities”, was reportedly moved to the infamous Evin Prison in Tehran two weeks ago – the same prison where two other Christians, Majidreza Souzanchi Kushani and Fatimeh Mohammadi (both members of the self-styled “Church of Iran”), have also been held since their arrest on 17 November last year.

According to the advocacy group Middle East Concern, Kushani was charged with “disrupting national security” by being a member of an evangelical Christian group, for which he could receive a prison sentence of between two and ten years.

It remains unclear on what grounds Mohammadi is being held, in the women’s ward of the infamous prison referred to by two other Christian women who spent eight months there as the “the world’s most brutal prison”.

Maryam Rostampour and Marziyeh Amirizadeh, speaking in November, said they experienced relentless interrogation and physical threats during their time in the prison in 2009/10.

It has been eight years since their release, but Rostampour said: “When people experience living in Evin Prison they will never be the same again. The stress is too much. We can’t be the same people. We can’t be as happy as before. We don’t enjoy activities like normal people because all the time we think of those who are still there.”

‘They broke my identity’

Another Christian who recently spent time in the prison was Saman*. Saman, a convert from Islam to Christianity, was arrested in 2016 and imprisoned in Evin for 44 days because of activities related to his Christian faith.

He says the time following his release was also difficult, as the authorities kept an eye on him to ensure he wouldn’t visit other Christians or attend a church meeting. He says he was traumatised but did not receive the support he needed.

A local partner of the Christian charity Open Doors recently organised trauma-care training for Christians like him, where they were offered counselling, art therapy and Bible studies. Saman says the training helped to restore his hope and faith.

Saman says of his time in Evin: “They tried to break me by telling me what a nobody I was; they broke my identity.” He says he was afraid and felt hopeless, even doubting his faith: “I thought: ‘Is this it? Have I wasted 13 years of believing in Him [God]? Does he even exist?’”

He says the interrogators also brought in some of his friends, blindfolded, and when asked whose fault it was that they were there, they would all say “Saman” and that they would be willing to testify against him in court.

Evin Prison was visited by a delegation of 11 Iranian MPs on 30 January to investigate alleged abuse, as Radio Farda reported. During their visit, the MPs spoke with four detainees while surrounded by intelligence officers, drawing criticism from the deputy head of parliament’s Legal and Judicial Commission, Mohammad Kazemi, who said: “It would have been better if they’d stayed away, since we had to talk to the detainees in private.”

C’era speranza tra i cristiani iraniani che le proteste di massa all’inizio di quest’anno avrebbero potuto produrre un cambiamento per loro, ma continuano a essere molestate e imprigionate con accuse spurie.

Un iraniano convertito al cristianesimo, Naser Navard Gol-Tapeh, che ha recentemente perso il suo appello contro una pena di 10 anni per “attività missionarie”, è stato riferito che è stato trasferito nell’infame carcere di Evin a Teheran due settimane fa – la stessa prigione dove due altri cristiani , Majidreza Souzanchi Kushani e Fatimeh Mohammadi (entrambi membri della sedicente “Church of Iran”), sono stati detenuti dal loro arresto il 17 novembre scorso.

Secondo il gruppo di sensibilizzazione Middle East Concern, Kushani è stato accusato di “sconvolgere la sicurezza nazionale” essendo membro di un gruppo cristiano evangelico, per il quale poteva ricevere una pena detentiva compresa tra due e dieci anni.

Non è chiaro su quali basi si trovi Mohammadi, nel reparto femminile dell’infame prigione cui fanno riferimento due altre donne cristiane che vi hanno trascorso otto mesi come “la prigione più brutale del mondo”.

Maryam Rostampour e Marziyeh Amirizadeh, parlando a novembre, hanno dichiarato di aver subito un interrogatorio incessante e minacce fisiche durante il loro periodo di detenzione nel 2009/10.

Sono passati otto anni dalla loro uscita, ma Rostampour ha detto: “Quando le persone vivono nella prigione di Evin, non saranno più le stesse. Lo stress è troppo. Non possiamo essere le stesse persone. Non possiamo essere felici come prima. Non ci piacciono le attività come le persone normali, perché tutto il tempo pensiamo a coloro che sono ancora lì “.

“Hanno rotto la mia identità”

Un altro cristiano che di recente ha passato del tempo in prigione è stato Saman *. Saman, convertito dall’islam al cristianesimo, è stato arrestato nel 2016 e imprigionato a Evin per 44 giorni a causa di attività legate alla sua fede cristiana.

Dice anche che il tempo successivo alla sua liberazione è stato difficile, poiché le autorità lo tenevano d’occhio per assicurarsi che non visitasse altri cristiani o non partecipasse a una riunione in chiesa. Dice di essere stato traumatizzato ma non ha ricevuto il sostegno di cui aveva bisogno.

Un partner locale della carità cristiana Open Doors ha recentemente organizzato corsi di formazione per il trauma per i cristiani come lui, dove sono stati offerti consulenza, arteterapia e studi biblici. Saman dice che l’allenamento ha aiutato a ripristinare la sua speranza e la sua fede.

Saman dice del suo tempo in Evin: “Hanno cercato di infranmi dicendomi che non ero nessuno; hanno rotto la mia identità “. Dice di avere paura e di sentirsi senza speranza, anche dubitando della sua fede:” Ho pensato: ‘È così? Ho sprecato 13 anni credendo in Lui [Dio]? Esiste anche? ‘”

Dice che gli interrogatori hanno anche portato alcuni dei suoi amici, con gli occhi bendati, e quando gli è stata chiesta la colpa che erano lì, avrebbero detto tutti “Saman” e che sarebbero stati disposti a testimoniare contro di lui in tribunale.

Il 30 gennaio una prigione di Evin è stata visitata da una delegazione di 11 parlamentari iraniani per indagare su presunti abusi, come riportato da Radio Farda. Durante la loro visita, i parlamentari hanno parlato con quattro detenuti circondati da agenti dei servizi segreti, attirando le critiche del vice capo della Commissione legale e giudiziaria del parlamento, Mohammad Kazemi, che ha detto: “Sarebbe stato meglio se fossero rimasti lontani, dal momento che noi dovevo parlare ai detenuti in privato. ”

Earlier this month, on the occasion of the 39th anniversary of the Iranian Revolution, President Hassan Rouhani called for unity, saying: “We should trust the people. We must allow all inclinations to participate in elections… Our revolution was victorious when we were all together… All Iranian races, all Iranian religions, Shiites and Sunnis, Muslims, Christians, Jews and Zaroastrians – whoever believes in the constitution, that is our criteria. He is a revolutionary and he must be respected.”

His comments followed weeks of social unrest and protests, revealing not just economic frustration but also disillusionment with the way the 39-year-old regime is perceived by some to “use Islam for their own ideology”, as Article 18’s Mansour Borji told World Watch Monitor in January.

But despite the pressures, Christianity is spreading in Iran. Official figures are hard to come by in a country where turning away from Islam is a crime, but based on observing several factors Christian charity Open Doors says there are approximately 800,000 Christians in Iran – roughly one per cent of its population of over 80 million. This is a conservative estimate, they add, as several reports show that that the Church is growing and that Christians from a Muslim background – and therefore unrecognised by the state – now outnumber the recognised Christian minorities of Armenian and Assyrian descent.
