A mob of about 60 people armed with machetes, knives and iron rods raided a Catholic convent and beat up its nuns and priest – the Catholic mission in Rangpur district, 280 kilometers northwest of Bangladesh’s capital city Dhaka. The attack was said to be the first attack of this kind in the country, according to the Bishop of the local diocese Dinajpur, Sebastian Tudu: \”It’s unprecedented because nuns are highly respected in Bangladesh. The attack is obviously a targeted and planned attempt at intimidation. The July 7 attack including attempted rape and looting began around 2am and lasted for nearly two hours; consequently the incident led to multiple protests by thousands of Christians across the country.
Speaking with World Watch Monitor, Father Anthony Sen, Secretary of the Justice and Peace Commission in the Catholic diocese of Dinajpur, said the assailants of Boldi Pukur Catholic mission had ulterior motives including the seizure of the church’s land. According to UN-funded IRIN, a humanitarian news and analysis service, attacks on Bangladeshi minorities’ property is increasingly common and ‘it is not clear whether Islamist politics is behind the violence, or whether bandits are taking advantage of political instability to seize land and other assets from vulnerable groups.’ Of Bangladesh’s 154 million people, Sunni Muslims constitute 90% and Hindus 9%, according to the 2001 census. The remaining 1% are mainly Christian and Buddhist.\”One of the major reasons for the attacks is occupying land and assets. If repeated attacks take place, Hindus [or any religious minority group] will migrate and this will help local [lawbreakers] to occupy the land,\” Rana Dasgupta the general secretary of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, told IRIN. After a primary investigation, police found that a robbery had been committed in the convent but denied the allegation by clergy that the raid was a planned attack by local Muslims over a land dispute. Rabiul Islam, inspector of Mithapukur police station under Rangpur district, told World Watch Monitor that robbery was the sole motive.
\”Three teams perpetrated the robbery. We have arrested one team [12 people] so far. Our initial interrogation yielded that robbery was their motive,\” said Islam. Of the twelve, ten are Muslims and two are local tribespeople.

World Watch Monitor However Father Sen still isn’t convinced: \”One of the robbers asked the nuns, while beating [them], about the documents of the case regarding a current land dispute between the church and a local influential political leader.\” (The Church donated a piece of land to a school run by Muslims near the church. But the local political leader has tried to illegally occupy more of the church’s land). \”The robber also asked where the Father and the nuns get money to continue the case regarding the land dispute,\” said Sen.
The authority of the Catholic mission filed a robbery case in the nearby police, without reporting any names. The Bishop of Dinajpur Sebastian Tudu said: \”The most recent attack is clearly a targeted response to Catholics’ commitment to the country’s poorest people.\” Details of the attack. The robbers first entered the priest’s house. After tying him up and beating him they proceeded to vandalize his home and steal his valuables. Next they went to the medical house, inside the mission compound, where they beat a nun for information about the other nuns, and details regarding the location of the convent. In total there were seven nuns on location, of which three were beaten while the others managed to hide. \”The attackers tried to rape the nuns, but the women were saved by the grace of God. Their attempts to desecrate the vow of chastity of nuns for greater humanity and the service of God are shameful for us,\” said Sen. \”When local influential people try to illegally occupy the land of poor tribal Christians, the priest and nuns make a stand against it. Formerly East Pakistan, Bangladesh was established in 1971. After 15 years under military rule, democracy was restored in 1990.
Despite a constitution that provides religious freedom, Bangladesh is officially an Islamic state. However, unlike neighboring Pakistan, the country does not struggle with blasphemy laws or any anti-conversion bills. Even with the nation’s current democratic liberties, Islamist extremist groups continue to try to modify the constitution and establish Shariah law.
According to the World Watch List, compiled by global ministry Open Doors, which works amongst minority Christians, Bangladesh ranks at number 48 on a list of the top 50 countries where Christians are most under pressure for their faith. The main source of persecution is Islamic extremism.

Sattar Miah, a Christian who was formerly Muslim, was attacked after a group of seven Muslims broke into his family’s house in the early hours of June 29 in North Bangladesh: Manmath, Gaibandha District. An Open Doors’ worker who cannot be named due to security told World Watch Monitor, \”One of the attackers stepped onto Sattar’s neck and was about to slit his throat with a dagger when his family began screaming, which alerted the neighbors, so that Sattar was rescued in time.\” \”They came with rods and daggers. They looted the house. When Sattar tried to stop them, they overpowered him and beat him,\” said the Open Doors worker. Two months prior to the attack, Sattar Miah and 39 other Christians, who had also previously been Muslim, filed a complaint for the religious pressure they had been receiving from the village’s Muslims.
\”The police told the Muslims not to do any harm against us,\” Sattar’s pastor said. \”The Muslims were quiet for a while, and then they started pressuring the Muslim background believers to renounce their Christian faith and ask for forgiveness in the mosque. The Muslim background believers (known as MBBs for short) did not give in to them.\”\”For the past two years, these MBBs have been living under threat,\” said Open Doors’ worker. \”They are cut off from the community relations, kicked out of their work, and their children are maltreated in schools, but still they continue to stand firm in their faith in Jesus Christ.\” Political tensions have spilled over into violence.The beginning of 2014 saw continuing violence and Human Rights Watch (HRW) said Bangladesh had \”tumbled backward on human rights\”. In its recent report, HRW said nearly 200 people were killed and thousands more were injured in violent street protests in 2013. China crackdown on charities along its NK border.
According to Reuters, ‘China is cracking down on Christian charity groups near its border with North Korea … with hundreds of members of the community forced to leave the country and some who remain describing an atmosphere of fear.’.
The action is believed to be aimed at closing off support to North Koreans who illegally enter China after fleeing persecution and poverty, before going on to other nations – most often South Korea.
This move comes ahead of Pope Francis’ visit to South Korea next week, the first visit by a Pope in 25 years.
The Archdiocese of Seoul said it invited about 10 North Korean Catholics to attend mass given by Pope Francis but the NK government sponsored Church has rejected the offer.

Cuba’s religious freedom violations on the rise.
Christian Solidarity Worldwide has released a report documenting a dramatic increase in the abuse of religious freedom in Cuba.
According to CSW some of the violations include: severe harassment and violent beatings of Protestant pastors and lay workers; scores of women violently dragged away from Sunday morning services by state security agents; and forced closures, confiscation and demolition of churches. It also reports that a Baptist pastor, who had been working for more than 50 years as the leader of a church, finally accepted asylum in the US.

By Uzi Baruch, Ari Yashar. 8/13/2014, Three Jewish visitors to the Temple Mount on Tuesday were met by a throng of rabidly chanting Muslim visitors, who attempted to intimidate them off the holiest site in Judaism, and succeeded in forcing police to close Jewish access to the holy site. Towards the start of the video from the incident, which was uploaded by the Joint HQ for Temple Movements, one of the Jews is observed approaching the police, arguing that the raucous chants constitute incitement. The incident comes just as the Knesset\’s Interior Committee is set to discuss the police\’s management of the holy site on Wednesday.
In light of the total collapse of religious rights for Jews at the site, the Joint HQ for Temple Movements announced it would demand a complete separation of Jews and Muslims at the Temple Mount during the Interior Committee meeting, citing the model of the Cave of Machpelah in Hevron. The Joint HQ expressed its hopes that such a move would be taken \”before G-d forbid a tragedy occurs at the site.\” It is worth noting that this is far from the first time that Muslim mobs have succeeded in forcing police to close the site to Jews; rioting Muslims threw objects and closed the site to Jews three days in a row in June. More recently, Muslims burned and looted a police station on the Temple Mount last month in a shocking breakdown of law and order. As for whether the Interior Committee will be able to change the situation, back in June the Committee\’s sub-committee on Jewish prayer rights at the Temple Mount issued a report which surprisingly recommended maintaining the status quo at the Mount. MK Zevulun Kalfa (Jewish Home) slammed the recommendations for in his words leaving the Mount in the hands of Hamas, even though they were made by members of his own Jewish Home party.
In particular, he noted the suggestions left the Jordanian Waqf (Islamic trust) with de facto rule, giving them the power to charge tourists money to visit the site. Ad Uglegorsk i filorussi denunciano strage di civili dell\’esercito ucraino. Martedì le forze di sicurezza ucraine hanno bombardato la città di Uglegorsk della regione di Donetsk: ci sono state decine o addirittura centinaia di civili uccisi, riporta il centro stampa dell\’autoproclamatasi Repubblica Popolare di Donetsk. Frans van der Lugt, a Jesuit priest who refused to leave the embattled city of Homs, Syria, in solidarity with the few Christians still living there, was killed by assassins Monday in his garden. Known among the people as Abouna Francis, the native Dutchman had worked in Syria for more than 40 years. He was 75. “Father Frans was apparently killed by targeted headshots. We have received a phone report from a Christian who was with him in the Old City,” reported Aid to the Church in Need, a Catholic agency, in an April 7 statement that cited another Jesuit in Syria, Rev. Ziad Hillal. Independent news accounts reported that van der Lugt was forcibly removed from his house and pulled into his garden, where he was shot twice through the head. The son of a banker, Van der Lugt arrived in the Middle East in 1966, first living in Lebanon and moving to Homs in the early 1970s. As is common in the Jesuit order, he was a teacher, with an emphasis in working with special-needs students. As the Syrian civil war approached Homs, the priest resolved to stay with the dwindling Christian community that remained. Tens of thousands of Christians across the country, targeted by rebels who consider them allies of the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, have fled their homes during the way, many to other locations in Syria, and others to neighboring Lebanon or Turkey. Once home to an estimated 60,000 Christians, fewer than 30 remain in the Old City sector of Homs, an ancient town that was a rebel stronghold in the early days of the three-year-old Syrian uprising. The government has regained control of much of the city, while rebels retain a hold on the Old City. During a February interview with Dutch radio, van der Lugt explained his reasons for staying in the besieged Old City sector.
“When I leave, nothing will be left of this building,” he said. “And I don’t want to leave alone the 28 Christians that have remained.” During the interview, the priest described the Old City as almost completely destroyed, and the people as constantly hungry. A recent food delivery by the UN, he said, “isn’t enough at all for the about 2,000 people left.” “They brought pans and cloths the people didn’t need. We need rice, food, that didn’t come in sufficiently. There is a huge lack of food. At our breakfast we eat olives and drink tea. In the afternoon we make soup with what grows between the stones on the street.” “In the evening,” he said, “we just see what we can get.” Even in his advanced age, van der Lugt got around the war-pocked city on his bicycle, tending to the elderly and disabled and trying, like everyone else, to obtain enough food for the day. It was a constant struggle. On Jan. 27, a short video was posted on You Tube in which van der Lugt, sitting before a darkened altar, speaks directly into the camera about the desperate situation in Homs. “One of our biggest problems is hunger,” he said. “There is nothing to eat.” Rev. L’esperto continua: Gli USA – cito la dichiarazione fatta la settimana scorso al Congresso dal Pentagono – “hanno consiglieri integrati nel ministero della difesa dell’Ucraina”. Ciò significa che dirigiamo questa guerra. Kiev non ha il denaro. Non ha né equipaggiamento, né esperienza. Siamo noi e la NATO a condurre questa guerra che è una specie di operazione congiunta di Washington e della NATO. Senza di noi il governo di Kiev cadrà. Adesso molti hanno già cominciato a dimenticare come è cominciata tutta questa crisi. Le menti degli abitanti degli USA e dell’Europa sono stati obnubilati dalle voci e dalla disinformazione diretta sulla tragedia dell’aereo di linea malese. Il presidente Obama travisa tutti i fatti relativi all’Ucraina, dice Stephen Lendman, un altro storico, politologo e presentatore alla radio: Washington e i suoi partner di Kiev portano tutto il carico di responsabilità per quello che succede adesso in Ucraina. Per tutta la violenza, per tutti i fallimenti economici. In Ucraina è stato organizzato un colpo di Stato, che viene sostenuto appunto da Obama. Tra i nuovi amici di Obama a Kiev ci sono molti estremisti nazisti, aperti bastonatori nazisti, elementi antisociali dichiarati. Il presidente Obama ha appoggiato l’instaurazione a Kiev del potere della folla. Per quanto riguarda le sanzioni economiche contro la Russia imposte all’Europa, esperti europei ritengono che l’“ubbidienza” di Bruxelles porterà più danno a tutti i paesi dell’Ue presi insieme che non a sola Mosca. Il presidente russo Vladimir Putin ha dichiarato che molti dei suoi partner europei vogliono uscire dalla difficile situazione creatasi per via delle sanzioni.
\”Molte persone in Europa, tra cui leader politici e miei partner, recentemente ho parlato con il presidente della Francia e sento il suo atteggiamento, tutti vogliono uscire il più presto possibile da questa situazione, dannosa per la nostra collaborazione\”, – ha detto Putin in un incontro con l\’attivista politico francese Philippe de Villiers.
